WWE’s Plan To Expand Future Big Four Premium Live Events

WWE generally attracts significant attention and revenue to the host cities of their major events. Indianapolis is set to benefit greatly as it will host the Royal Rumble in 2025, as well as future SummerSlam and WrestleMania events.

The news of these events was initially reported last week and confirmed by WWE on June 24. The Indiana Sports Corp had been advocating for these events locally. This announcement solidifies the locations for SummerSlam, WrestleMania, and Royal Rumble through 2025, with two locations for subsequent years already determined.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reports that the Royal Rumble as a potential February event had been discussed for some time, as was a potential WrestleMania date in May before late April was settled on. It was important to avoid conflicts with the Super Bowl weekend and NFL playoffs in making these decisions. While the Royal Rumble may not always remain in February, the Super Bowl calendar could influence its timing.

Additionally, WWE’s press release announced that a future two-night SummerSlam would be held in Indiana. WWE sources indicated that the expansion to two nights for SummerSlam in Minnesota marked the beginning of this format likely continuing for future events. WrestleMania and SummerSlam are planned to be two-night extravaganzas moving forward. Although there is no current plan for the Royal Rumble to expand to two nights, a longtime WWE executive suggested that it could easily be adapted for a two-night format.

WWE reportedly highlighted several advantages of hosting events in Indianapolis, including the city’s ease of access, proximity to other major cities, and the indoor stadium. Indianapolis also had a strong showing for peripheral events around the Super Bowl years ago.

WWE has ambitious plans for future events, especially with their partnership with Fanatics generating significant revenue. The Fanatics WWE World fan event at WrestleMania was highly successful, and it remains to be seen how WWE will continue to maximize profits for their destination events.
