WWE is always looking to maximize its profits, and holding massive events is a key strategy. Following WrestleMania’s lead, SummerSlam is set to become a two-night extravaganza. Now, the Royal Rumble is under consideration for the same format, with many possibilities on the table.
Indianapolis will host the Royal Rumble next year, generating excitement throughout the city and the state of Indiana. Additionally, the city will host future SummerSlam and WrestleMania events, both of which will span two nights.
Sean Ross Sapp reported on his Backstage Report podcast on Fightful Select that there are no current plans to split the Royal Rumble into two nights. However, the event is well-suited for such a format, given it features both a men’s and a women’s Royal Rumble match.
“We have not been told of the Royal Rumble expanding to two nights but when I asked WWE sources about that I was told, ‘well, obviously the Royal Rumble is constructed to where it could be two nights. We could run one match one night, and run the other match the following night.’”
We will keep an eye on WWE’s future decisions. It isn’t hard to imagine a world where WWE’s big five events—WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank—are all two-night affairs. Given that both Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank have men’s and women’s matches, this transition seems logical.
WWE’s merger with UFC under Endeavor’s umbrella has significantly changed their business approach. They are now selling ad space to Prime Hydration in the middle of the ring, something unimaginable years ago. WWE is clearly focused on maximizing revenue from their live events.
