Masked Superstars, especially luchadors, have tried their hardest to keep their identities secret. Those attempts paid off to keep up that mystique, but it’s really hard to stay away from cameras in 2023.
Rey Mysterio continues to make an impact in 2023, leading the new LWO faction alongside Santos Escobar, Cruz Del Toro, Joaquin Wilde, Zelina Vega, and Carlito. Things really kicked up when Santos turned on Mysterio, splitting up the faction in the process. We know what to expect in this story now, but the legendary luchador is still out of action.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that, “It’s gonna be group vs group. It’s gonna be Santos and some partners vs Rey with partners. I don’t know what they’re going to do with the LWO name, which side gets it. Maybe they’re even going to feud over the name, I don’t know.”
WWE had Santos Escobar’s heel turn in the works for quite some time. Escobar continued to pursue heat over this injury, which was an effective heel turn. Rey Mysterio will be out for number of weeks to sell that beat-down which was part of Escobar’s heel turn, but he will be back to continue things. Mysterio was also dealing with that knee injury for months prior to this angle.
For over three months, Rey Mysterio had been dealing with torn meniscus in his right knee. He is expected to make a return in approximately six to eight weeks. In the meantime, a photo of Rey Mysterio, unmasked and using crutches, surfaced on Twitter/X, where he was spotted with a fan.
Rey Mysterio has been spotted a few times without his mask on in recent years. That being said, it’s still very interesting every time we get a look at Mr. 6-1-9’s actual face. We’re also hoping that Mysterio is able to heal up soon.
For the record, Dominik Mysterio has said that he would never wear a mask, because he’s too pretty. He will leave that to others, like his Hall of Famer father.
