RVD has been through a lot in his career, but he doesn’t have CTE. That is something he wanted to make very clear as he addressed rumors about him.
RVD was told during the early days of his career to say that he was actually related to Jean-Claude Van Damme. That kinship to hard-hitting fighting styles also opened the door for a few head injuries.
After his one match on AEW television, RVD also had to deal with haters who said that he had long-lasting symptoms after concussions. The Whole F’n Show was quick to shoot that down.
During his 1 of Kind podcast, RVD had a chance to address some of the rumors about him. That led him to take on the idea that he suffers from CTE.
“People are going to think my brain is fried because of concussions. That’s another think about legacy. People are going to think their brain works better than mine, somehow faster. People think I’m inferior to them because I’ve had concussions, but I think if you watch this show, not only can you see that my brain functions fine, and you can also see that I smoke a couple of joints and I don’t get ‘baked’ or ‘f*cked up.’”
“People are going to think I have CTE. That’s what they’re gonna talk about. Of course, I don’t have CTE. CTE is a degenerative and worsening thing, I don’t have it. I don’t even have longterm brain damage except for one thing that one idiot on social media knows about. Not to mention that I went through all the tests and doctors and neurologists, but still it’s gonna go down in history, because fans are idiots, that RVD had CTE and that’s why he doesn’t wrestle, because they don’t care about the truth.”
RVD shot down rumor in the past that WWE won’t let him wrestle due to his concussion history. After all, he’s made recent appearances, but he was not in the ring. The last time WWE fans saw RVD, he was calling names during the 2023 WWE Draft.
Pro wrestling fans like to talk a lot, and sometimes that speculation can get out of hand. RVD isn’t afraid to shut down that harmful narrative, because there’s nothing wrong with his brain as he sees it.
Only time will tell when fans see RVD wrestle again. He can obviously still perform his signature moves and pop a crowd, so you never know where he will pop up next.
