Professional wrestling has seen many commentators over the years from all over the world in multiple languages. In light of this, we are sad to announce that legendary commentator Günter Zapf has passed away at the age of 66.
AEW took to its official Twitter account and announced that Günter Zapf had passed away. It was noted that he was part of AEW’s Germany announce team for several years as well.
”With great sadness, AEW mourns the passing of Günter Zapf. A member of AEW Germany’s announce team for many years, he will be dearly missed.”
Gunter Zapf has had a diverse career spanning American football, wrestling commentary, and sports broadcasting. Originally from Germany, he began as a football player in Europe before transitioning to become one-half of the renowned WWF German commentary duo in 1993, alongside Carsten Schaefer. Together, they provided commentary for WWF VHS tapes and weekly TV shows across various German networks.
In 2013, Zapf departed WWE and expanded his commentary work to include broadcasts for the NFL and MLB in Germany. He then made a return to professional wrestling and served as one-half of the German commentary team for AEW, alongside former WCW commentator Mike Ritter.
We here at Ringside News offer our deepest condolences to Günter Zapf’s family and loved ones during this sad time and we pray that his soul rests in peace.
