Kevin Kelly, known for his work with wrestling promotions like WWE, Ring of Honor, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, found himself amidst controversy following reports of his departure due to contentious rant just before AEW Revolution. Kelly has now confirmed he plans on suing AEW over his departure.
Speculation arose regarding Kelly’s abrupt absence and subsequent return to AEW, sparking varied reactions from fans. Tensions escalated when Kelly publicly criticized Ian Riccaboni before the AEW Revolution pay-per-view, alleging defamation and emphasizing his significance within the company.
“But the idea of what I bring to the table is lost there because Ian libeled me. So I sit on the bench, valued by my peers, waiting to get my number called.“
It was then reported that Kevin Kelly’s absence was tied to legal matter as well and Kelly is currently doing other pro wrestling-related work now that he is no longer with AEW.
During recent interview with Wise Choices, Kevin Kelly discussed the events leading to his departure from AEW. According to Kelly, everything was going smoothly until a personal disagreement arose with Ian Riccaboni, an ROH announcer.
Kelly explained that Riccaboni accused him of being a conspiracy theorist and a right-wing radical simply because he wanted to raise awareness about child trafficking, inspired by the movie “Sound of Freedom.” Kelly clarified that while he didn’t agree with everything presented in the film, he felt strongly about the issue of child trafficking.
“That really pissed me off. I thought we were friends.”
Kelly recounted how he approached AEW HR about the situation, feeling hurt by being excluded from broadcasts during this time. He later learned from HR that the matter had been handled internally, but he wasn’t informed of the outcome due to its confidential nature.
“I get that but I was the victim! I didn’t want him to be fired. I just wanted an apology and know if this perception has hurt me in the company.”
Feeling increasingly frustrated by his treatment both within AEW and from some fans online, Kelly sought the help of an AEW psychiatrist. Despite this, he admitted leaving a heated message for HR and venting online about the situation, actions which led to his termination from the company.
“I don’t remember what I said, but I’m sure it was stiff. I got let go for the things I was saying publicly about the company on social media and the voice message I had left for the nice HR lady.”
Eric Bischoff then asked Kevin Kelly if he planned to sue AEW and Kelly made it very clear that he does plan on suing AEW over the nature of his release, stressing that he has to.
Eric Bischoff: “So what are you going to do? Are you suing them?”
Kevin Kelly: “Yes, of course. Have to.”
Kevin Kelly recently called out Tony Khan for his questionable management skills as well. Regardless, it is still a shame how things ended up but we’ll have to see if Kelly will end up winning the lawsuit.
