CM Punk remains one of the biggest names in the history of WWE and he is forever associated with Living Colour’s ”Cult of Personality” song. In fact, Punk demanded the original version of the song over WWE’s version.
Since 2011, CM Punk has entered the ring to the iconic tune “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour. The band’s lead vocalist, Corey Glover, recently appeared on the Drinks With Johnny podcast and discussed CM Punk’s enduring association with the song, which has become synonymous with his persona over the past decade.
Glover shared insights into how this connection came to be and how it has solidified “Cult of Personality” as a signature part of CM Punk’s wrestling legacy.
”I am now (a pro wrestling fan) now that (CM) Punk’s around. Yeah, sure. And then to find out that this guy, who went from backyard to the WWE, WWF to back to (AEW) and then back to WWE and the whole time, he never let go of Cult of Personality as his entrance music, and the way he tells it was like, when he was in Little League in the suburbs of Chicago, the team’s entrance music was Cult of Personality. Evidently, they had a very progressive coach and he really dug the song. So he kept it his whole career.”
Glover revealed that when Punk first joined WWE, the company intended to create a song similar to “Cult of Personality” using its in-house music department. Glover joked about the financial benefits of Punk’s insistence, saying, “Car payments are always good because of him.”
According to Glover, Punk’s contract includes a clause ensuring that wherever he goes, the song follows him. Glover also mentioned that WWE initially planned to develop custom entrance music for Punk when he first joined, but he resisted, demanding the actual version of “Cult of Personality.”
”They had it for a minute, yeah (Glover said about AEW using Cult of Personality), and I think once WWE, WWF got sold, I think the McMahons — once they sold, it’s like a huge, ridiculous amount of money.
There’s some ridiculous deal. They called back a bunch of people. Everybody but of course Chris Jericho because Chris (is with) AEW. But I’m sure he’ll be back soon too. We met Chris too. We did his podcast a couple years back… Like I said, back in the day when Punk was first going to WWF, they were like, ‘Okay, so we’re gonna get you your own entrance music.’ He’s like, ‘No, I already have entrance music.’
He made it a point that I’m not changing my entrance music. Because they had their own music division of the WWF and they were gonna have somebody make up a song that sounded similar to Cult of Personality. But that was gonna be his entrance music. ‘No, I don’t want that. I want the real thing.’ He’s like one of the talent that actually got that in his contract that wherever he goes, that goes with him… Car payments are good because of CM Punk (he laughed). ”
CM Punk is currently engaged in a feud with Drew McIntyre and vows to make his life living hell as well. We will have to wait and see how WWE will continue to book their feud in the coming weeks.
