AEW has lot of things going on right now, and MJF and Samoa Joe are set to do battle at Grand Slam next week. That has been a long time in the making.
Samoa Joe and MJF have history with each other. After all, Samoa Joe was the one who pushed MJF against a wall in NXT when the Salt of the Earth was just an extra. Now, the two are in much different positions. There were actually no plans in place for CM Punk and MJF to battle at all, despite Punk painting an X on the “Real” AEW World Title.
Sean Sapp noted behind Fightful’s paywall that Samoa Joe’s plans in AEW were already in place before All In London. It was stated that Tony Khan had intentions of placing Joe against MJF.
The CM Punk situation changed a lot of plans in AEW, but not one major program.

However, Samoa Joe’s plans were already in place as well. We’re told that despite CM Punk still having the Real World’s Championship, there were no immediate plans for an MJF/Punk program. Instead, Samoa Joe had previously been planned to feud with MJF as is the case on television now.
We will have to see what happens next in this situation. Samoa Joe has certainly come a long way, and so had MJF.
We will have to see who walks out of Arthur Ashe Stadium as AEW World Champion. The company only has a few more days left to hype that show before it comes around.
